# Lagos Index / reader test

Status: prepared, not run. The owner confirmed on 4 November 2026 that no readers are available yet. No participant findings, completion rates, quotes or usability outcomes are recorded.

## Purpose

Observe whether a reader can move from an interest to a suitable place and explain what they must check before visiting. Recruit 3–5 people from the intended audience: Lagos residents or returning visitors curious about cultural spaces. A ten-minute individual session is enough for this first round. Use a phone for at least two sessions and a laptop for at least one.

## Opening / 1 minute

Explain: this is an independent prototype and the interface is being tested. They may stop at any time. Ask permission before taking notes or recording. Do not collect names, contact details or sensitive personal information in the score sheet. Use participant IDs such as R01. Ask: “When did you last choose a cultural place to visit, and how did you decide?” Record what they say without interpreting it as a finding yet.

## Tasks / 7 minutes

1. “You are interested in visual art in Ikoyi. Find a place you would consider. Tell me what made you choose it.” Observe the route, whether they discover the intersection of filters, and whether the profile changes their understanding. Success is a suitable place and a reason in their own words. Do not name a control or venue.
2. “Keep that place for later, find one other place that interests you, and put your preferred choice first.” Observe save-state understanding, ability to find Saved and ability to reorder. Success is two saved places in the reader’s intended order without facilitator instructions.
3. “Take a copy away with you, then explain what you would still need to check before leaving home.” Observe the export and whether the reader distinguishes the historical examples/diagram from current venue details. Success is a usable copy and an explanation of programme, opening or access confirmation plus a separate travel check.

If a reader stalls for 30 seconds, ask “What are you looking for?” Do not explain the solution. After 60 seconds, offer to move on and record the task as assisted or incomplete. Use the same intervention rule for everyone.

## Debrief / 2 minutes

Ask: What was least clear? What information helped you choose? What was missing before you would actually go? Would you return to the guide, and for what job? Let the reader answer before mentioning possible changes.

## Record

Use reader-score-sheet.csv. Record task outcome as unassisted / assisted / incomplete, time in seconds, the observed behaviour and exact wording only when useful and permitted. Separate observation, interpretation and proposed change. A small qualitative study can expose confusion; it cannot establish conversion uplift or population-level preference.

## Synthesis and revision

Group repeated problems by task. Prioritise issues that block a choice, lose a saved place or make a historical reference look current. For each, retain the observation, proposed revision and reason. Make a change, then use the same task with a fresh reader. Publish only real findings with the sample and date stated; leave fields blank until sessions happen.
